KIRA DUIT ยท SAVINGS

How much savings should I have by age 30 in Malaysia?

There is no single correct savings balance at 30. A better benchmark separates emergency cash, short-term goals and long-term retirement savings.

Start with your emergency fund

Before comparing yourself with an age benchmark, check whether you can handle an income interruption or unexpected expense. A practical emergency fund is commonly expressed as several months of essential expenses.

Separate cash from retirement savings

Cash needed for emergencies or near-term goals has a different job from EPF and other long-term retirement assets. Adding everything into one savings number can hide whether you actually have accessible cash.

Example: Someone with RM40,000 saved but no emergency cash because all of it is locked into long-term assets is in a different position from someone with a six-month cash buffer plus retirement savings.

Your income history matters

At 30, people may have very different years in the workforce, salaries, education costs and family responsibilities. Compare your progress with your goals and cash flow, not only with somebody else's headline number.

Build the next milestone

If your emergency fund is incomplete, make that the first target. Then define specific savings goals and use a monthly contribution that fits your income.

Consistency matters more than a perfect benchmark

A sustainable monthly saving habit gives you a path forward even if your current balance is lower than you hoped.
